The main minerals of magnesia-calcium bricks, MgO and CaO, exhibit different slag-resistance characteristics. The chemical reaction between MgO and slag is difficult, and even if a certain degree of reaction occurs, the magnesium brick manufacturer does not produce low-melting minerals. For example, MgO can dissolve a large amount of FeO without generating a liquid phase; MgO is also highly resistant to SiO2 in the slag. Therefore, MgO has strong chemical resistance to slag. However, the permeability of MgO against slag is poor, and the high temperature slag is easily infiltrated into the interior of MgO (permanite) to form a metamorphic layer.


Compared with MgO, CaO has a large reactivity with slag, and it is easily eroded by slag containing high FeO. Therefore, CaO is less resistant to chemical attack by slag. However, it reacts with SiO2 in the slag to form a high-melting mineral C2S or C3S, which increases the viscosity of the slag and inhibits the penetration of the slag into the interior of the brick. Therefore, the permeability of CaO against slag is stronger than that of MgO.


The higher the purity of the magnesia-calcium brick, the smaller the reactivity with the slag, the less the low-melt formed, and the stronger the ability to resist the chemical attack of the slag.


The denser the microstructure of the magnesia-calcium brick, the more difficult it is to infiltrate the slag into the interior of the brick, and the stronger the ability to resist slag penetration.


Increasing the MgO content, purity and density of magnesia-calcium bricks can improve the ability of magnesia-calcium bricks to resist slag erosion; increase the content and density of CaO, and improve the ability of magnesia-calcium bricks to resist slag penetration. In practical application, according to the operating conditions of the refining equipment, the optimum MgO/CaO ratio, purity and density of the magnesia-calcium brick should be determined, so that the magnesia-calcium brick has good resistance to chemical erosion and penetration of the slag, so as to obtain more Good use effect. Practice has proved that the comprehensive slag resistance of magnesium-rich dolomite bricks rich in MgO is better than that of dolomite bricks. Therefore, high-purity and high-density magnesia dolomite bricks which are fired at a high temperature are mostly used in the slag line portion of the refining furnace.
